Inscription.
Built for Matthew Pate and Alice Witcher Jordan, this Queen Anne structure retains Italianate arched window openings and bracketed cornice.

The M.P. Jordan company founder rose to prominence in Danville's flourishing tobacco business serving as president of the Danville Tobacco Association. He later became president of the Commercial Bank and the People's Savings and Loan as well as a principal investor in the Dan River Power and Manufacturing Company which merged with Riverside Cotton Mills to become the future Dan River, Inc.

Mrs. Jordan, a charter member of the Ladies Benevolent Society, helped to create the City's first hospital in 1884 and joined eleven other ladies in 1893 to found the Wednesday Afternoon Club (later the Wednesday Club).

4. Alice Witcher Jordan Memorial Bench
A memorial bench dedicated to Alice Witcher Jordan is still located on the grounds of the now-defunct Stratford College. The bench is behind the former Simpson Hall building on South Main Street.

Alice Witcher Jordan was also a charter member of the Wednesday Club in 1893. The Club recently celebrated its 131st anniversary.
