Veterans Memorial Park of Jackson County. Dedicated November 14, 2020. This park was created to: , . Honor the men and women from Jackson County who served and sacrificed their lives to preserve our freedom. , . Recognize and honor all service men and women of the Armed Forces, Army, Marines, Navy, Coast Guard, Air Force, and Space Force. , . Honor and remember Prisoners of War and Missing in Action (POW-MIA) veterans. , . Educate our citizens, with an emphasis on our children, on US Military history and the military conflicts that have been fought to preserve our freedoms. , . Enjoy the Park, and as you enter, please do so with respect for all our veterans who are remembered and honored with this park. , Park History , In the summer of 2014, the vision for a Memorial Park to honor our veterans began with the placement of a military tank at the Park. The groundbreaking ceremony was held in 2016. On October 2017, prior to the placement of the first concrete at the park, a ceremony was held to bury soil collected from foreign battlefields at the point where the star is now located in the center of the memorial. In May 2018, a ceremony was held to raise the Park's three flags for the first time: The American Flag, the POW-MIA flag, and the Alabama state flag. On Memorial Day weekend 2019, a special dedication ceremony was held for the Honor Wall, which lists those from Jackson County who died fighting for our country. At the same time, the service monuments and the POW-MIA monument were dedicated to recognize the military service of the United States and those members who became Prisoners of War or were Missing in Action. The Park's pavilion, designated as The Brotherhood Pavilion, was completed in June 2020. This park has become a reality due to the generous donations from citizens, organizations, and businesses and the significant volunteer work of veterans and non-veterans. , TAPS , At sunset, you will hear a series of drumrolls followed by a bugle playing TAPS to honor our fallen heroes. Please observe proper protocol by removing your headgear and placing your hand over your heart while facing the United States flag. Active duty military personnel and veterans, please render the hand salute while facing the flag until the music has completed.
