1. General Lee on The Lady Farm Marker
Inscription. July 2, 1863, dawned with the Lady Farm under Confederate occupation. General Johnson used the farmhouse for his headquarters. Surgeons prepared the house and barn for the casualties that were sure to come. Daniel, Rebecca. and their seven children, ranging in age from 10 years to 3 months, were holed up in the house, apprehensively awaiting what was to come. General Lee, with General Ewell, arrived at the Lady Farm to meet with Johnson. The account from Sarah Lady says that Lee was mounted on his horse and talking to officers on the porch. Those officers then mounted their horses and all rode to nearby Benner's Hill to assess the Union line.

Lee's battle plan for July 2nd called for Ewell to demonstrate against the Union right on Culp's while Longstreet attacked "up the Emmitsburg Road" assailing Cemetery Hill on its more gradual slope from the South.

Johnson had placed 19-year-old Major Joseph Latimer, known by his superiors as "The Boy Major" in charge of placing his Battalion of Artillery. Latimer rode and surveyed the area through the morning of July 2nd but found no better location to place his guns than on Benner's Hill, directly West of the Lady Farm.
