Straban Township in Gettysburg in Adams County, Pennsylvania — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
Home, Headquarters, Hospital
In the family's absence, the wounded men from Latimer's Artillery and Johnson's Infantry were brought here; officers were treated in the house while enlisted men were treated in the barn. Johnson's Division took possession of nine different farms for use as hospitals. With the Lady Farm's proximity to the fighting, it provided the first medical attention these men would receive.t Those well enough to be moved were taken out the Natural Springs Road (which crossed the Lady property) to the York Pike where Johnson's other hospitals were located. The more seriously wounded were treated and kept at the Lady Farm.
Daniel went on to claim "various articles of personal property or carried off...the buildings were used for hospital purposes. Upon the return of the family on Saturday (July 4th) wounded soldiers were in the house and dead bodies were lying around which we were obliged to bury." Christian and Susan Benner, nearby neighbors of the Lads, stopped by, July 4th and recounted seeing"...no kinds of provisions left, and no carpets, except, a one covered in blood..."
In 1868, Daniel filed for $1,461.97 worth of damages and, in 1879, he received $1,257.97 from the government, the equivalent of $38,797.93 in 2024.
