Prairie In Progress. . , This area was planted in the spring of 2017 with native prairie seed. It is currently growing but will take 2-3 years to mature similar to the prairie shown. During this time, Toledo Zoo conservation staff will diligently manage invasive species and add plants as needed. Please bear with us during this transformation., Prairie's historically occurred throughout northwest Ohio and provided numerous ecological benefits. Each prairie plant has a root system as deep as 18' which allows the plant to survive seasonal droughts, reduces storm water runoff, removes harmful nutrients before they reach bodies of water and sequesters carbon dioxide from the air.
