[Français] Avant les quais solidement érigés, un tout autre paysage prenait place avec la présence du fleuve et des activités maritimes tout près des habitations et commerces du Montréal de l'époque.

La technologie a permis bien des changements au fil du temps. Des pilotis en bois d'origine, apparaissent au 20^e siècle les quais surélevés et construits en béton. Ils dessinent les lignes du Vieux-Port d'aujourd'hui.

[English] Before permanent piers were built, the landscape was entirely different, with the river and the port's activities existing alongside the homes and businesses typical of this period in Montréal's history.

Originally made of wood stilts, these structures evolved as new technologies were introduced. Raised concrete piers began making their appearance in the 20th century. Today, these piers shape the layout of the Old Port.
