Henderson in Rusk County, Texas — The American South (West South Central)
Cotton Gin
In 1792 Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin, a machine that revolutionized the cotton industry. In 1870 the U.S. Agricultural Schedules shows that Rusk County ranked 4th in the state in cotton production, and there were 57 cotton gins in the county by 1900. Cotton was very important to the overall economy of the county. During 1830-1860 Rusk County grew due to areas rich in agriculture. Cotton was king. Most early settlers were from the southern states and they brought their agricultural system and slaves with them to Texas. During the Civil War, cotton farming remained strong, because of tenant farming, railroad construction, and better farming equipment. Cotton farming declined after the discovery of oil in 1930. The Mt. Enterprise Gin was established in 1935 and operated until World War II. The Continental Gin Company produced the Munger Model Gin, powered by a 70 hp Anderson oil burning engine.
