1. Welcome to Historic Elmwood Cemetery Marker
In 1867, ten acres to the south and west of the existing Presbyterian, Methodist, and Confederate Cemeteries were purchased by several town businessmen and donated to be used as a public cemetery under the guidance of a board of directors. Two years later, in 1869, Elmwood Cemetery was officially chartered. The earliest grave, dated 1793, is in the Presbyterian Cemetery. Veterans who served in many major American wars, beginning with the American Revolution, are buried here.
"And now let us turn as a last argument for the early settlement of Shepherdstown, to the 'Testimony of the Rocks.' And first let me say that Tombstone's are not traditions, they are hard facts."
Danske Bedinger Dandridge
