The Broadway Market has helped maintain the identity of this neighborhood. Through the years it has been home to many nationalities. The German immigrants settled nearby in the 1870s. St. Stanislaus Parish drew the Polish citizens in such numbers that the Market became known as the "Polish Market. Later, other Eastern Europeans followed. More recently, Afro-Americans arrived.
