1. The 25 Pounder Gun Marker
If it was possible to love a gun-this was the gun, genuinely loved and respected by gunners the world over.
The 25 Pounder Gun was introduced into service of the British Army 1939, to replace the 18 pounder and 4,5 inch Howitzer which had been the main field artillery guns of WWI. The design and development work during the 1930's was to incorporate the direct fire and rate of fire efficiency of the 18 pounder with the high angle capability of the Howitzer and fire a HE shell of around 25 pounds.
Without doubt the 25 pounder was acclaimed the most effective gun in WW2 with its great mobility, high rate of fire (6-8 rounds per minute) and lethal ammunition. The "gun" was introduced to the Irish Army (Defence Forces) in 1949 and served various regiments throughout its 60 years of service. It was decommissioned in July 2009.
This decommissioned 25 pounder was handed over to the IUNVA by the Director of Combat Support, Col D Hayes in 2010.
