Why the Irish were there?
Vicious inter-clan fighting led to the deaths of 30,000 Somalis in 1991-1992 in addition to 200,000 who died from famine. Chaos ensued as international aid workers in the country were murdered and convoys of famine relief materials were looted.
The situation in the country continued to deteriorate and the UN changed its previous mission in Somalia to one of peace enforcement. For Irish troops to participate in this type of action, legislation in the Dαil was required.
After [a] 37,000 troop enforcement group stablised the situation, the UN peacekeeping forces entered in May 1993.
The new mission had a revised mandate which included the disarmament of Somali factions.
Irish Troops arrived amidst chaos in Septemb[e]r 1993, equipped with over 40 vehicles. Based in Camp Shannon in Baidoa, 177 miles from Mogadishu, the Irish contingent's main task was to provide supplies for the brigade based in the Baidoa region.
Supplies were obtained by a weekly 'Mog RUN' to Mogadishu, the central location whereat all supplies were delivered. Mog [R]uns were dangerous as attacks aimed at capturing vehicles, arms or food w[e]re a common occurrence.
2 Transport Company's tour of duty included an attack during a Mog Run which led to a fire fight between the convoy and a large group of bandits, resulting in the deaths of at least 11 attackers.
Though troops were removed in September [1]994, Lt C[ol] Dorcha Lee, the UN forces Senior SO coordinator, remained until the mission was complete in February 1995.
