1. Human Rights and Poverty Stone Marker
17 October Stones can be found in over 50 meeting places worldwide. They all bear the pledge of Joseph Wresinski (1917-1988), initiator of the United Nations' Day for the Eradication of Poverty. The first Stone was inaugurated on 17 October 1987 by Wresiski in Paris, at the Trocadero Plaza of Human Rights and Liberties.
The legacy of Joseph Wresinski is still alive today. In 2012, the United Nations adopted the Guiding Principles on Extreme Poverty and Human Rights. Ireland, as a UN State member, is invited to implement them. These Principles provide a [illegible] framework for the UN commitment to eradicate poverty everywhere, in all its forms, by 2030.
Annually, on 17 October, citizens from all walks of life come together here! They listen to people who experience poverty and discrimination in their daily lives. They commit to action for change and for justice.
May the message of this Stone be an inspiration every day.
