The National Lighthouse Museum plans to expand unto Building 10 within the next five years. , , FOUNDRY/MACHINE SHOP - BUILDING 11 , Built 1912 , Constructed in 1912 as a foundry, this pavilion-like building has an exposed steel angle truss system that supports a 10 foot wide clerestory running north to south. The clerestory once had multiple-paned fixed wood sash windows but in now covered with corrugated fiberglass. In 1998, the entire site was selected for the National Lighthouse Museum and Educational Resource Center. Visitors are welcome to enjoy exhibits about the U.S.L.H.S. General Depot and the history and technology of our nation’s lighthouses., PIER , The pier extends into the harbor from the plaza, offering a panoramic view of New York City from the Verrazzano Bridge part the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty to New Jersey. The exact date of the pier has not been confirmed but documentation indicates there was a wooden wharf at this location in the 1860s. A 1910 map indicates an L-shaped south wharf and north wharf forming a basin. A 1912 view of the south wharf shows a cast-iron lighthouse, lightships docked here, and numerous supplies on the wooden deck. Although the pier has undergone various changes throughout its history. It still features some of its early features, such as cut stone bumpers with rounded corners and wooden piles. After 1927, it was extended to accommodate larger boats., EXPERIMENTAL LIGHTHOUSE , The Romer Shoal Lighthouse was first built as the U.S.L.H.S. General Depot and used as an experimental facility to test out new lights, lenses, and other materials. It was dismantled and moved to its present location on the northeast side of Swash Channel near the entrance to New York Bay in 1898.
