John Marshall (1755-1835), soldier statesman and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, 1801 to 1835, was married to Mary Willis Ambler, January 3, 1783, in "The Cottage," once standing nearby.

Erected 1949 by Virginia State Bar Association and the Hanover Branch of the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities.
