Inscription.
With roots anchored deep in rich, organic soil, the "Baker-Currey" tree weathers adversity and continues reaching upward and outward. Old-growth cypress trees are favorite nesting sites for vulnerable Wood Storks. In the early 1900s, tens of thousands of storks raised their chicks here. Due to regional development pressures, these numbers have dropped dramatically. We continue the fight to protect, restore, and steward the legacy of wildlife and wildlands with which we've been entrusted, seeking allies along the way.

In the early 1950s, the Lee-Tidewater Cypress Company started logging Corkscrew Swamp Passionate Floridians from Tampa to Miami came together to protect this unique place and formed the Corkscrew Cypress Rookery Association. They gained the support of the National Audubon Society. Its president, John Baker, met with Lee-Tidewater president, J. Arthur Currey, and convinced him of the tremendous ecological value of the swamp. The company gifted 640 acres, with 5,040 acres purchased with funds raised by the National Audubon Society and many organizations and individuals, giving birth to Corkscrew
