The policing of New Haven started out in 1642 as a series of established guards and watches. On June 27, 1861, a bill "To Organize a Police Force for the City of New Haven" was approved. This bill established a uniformed police force called the Police Department of the City of New Haven. Three officers were elected, as well as twelve policemen and fifteen supernumeraries. The uniformed force is shown in formation on the northwest corner of the Green, in 1892. In 2013 there are approximately 400 officers in the New Haven Police Department.
