Inscription. In 1878 the concept for building a mission church in Hamilton Parish, east of Warrenton, was proposed by St. James' Episcopal Church. The branch church was originally to be located in New Baltimore; instead it was decided that this site at Mates Hill on Baldwin's Ridge was more suitable. This land, then on Rockspring Farm, was donated by Joseph W. Blackwell. The Rector of the parish at the time, the Rev. George W. Nelson, appointed a Board of Trustees to carry out the project. As money was raised, building continued, with completion in 1883. Adjacent to the church, land was set aside for a graveyard to include family plots, as was the custom. The branch church, named "Christ's Chapel," served those unable to travel to the main church in Warrenton.

In 1904 St. James Church had a membership of 161, including 20 members of the Chapel at Baldwin's Ridge. Weekly services were held at the chapel on Sunday afternoons. The chapel was in use until its closing during World War II because of shortages of fuel and other supplies. In 1949, after obtaining permission from the Bishop of Virginia, the chapel was deconsecrated and its furnishings removed to St. James in Warrenton. The building was dismantled in the 1950's. The graveyard continues undisturbed.
