Doris Duke Woods Trail
Malabar Farm
| | Ohio State Park | |
Our Ohio forest, which, if left alone, becomes thick and tropical, and impenetra- ble during the summer, quite naturally takes over even today any field which is left abandoned for a few years.
-Louis Bromfield-From My Experience, 1955
Trail Description:
To pay mounting medical bills for treatments for bone cancer and compli- cations arising from that disease Louis Bromfield found it necessary to sell the timbering rights to these hillsides, something he would have done only out of desperation. He died believing the trees would be cut. Doris Duke, a friend of Bromfield's, heard of the sale and was able to buy the timbering rights back, thus saving the trees. Some of these trees are now over 200 years old.
Trees common to this woodland include red and white oak, beech, and sugar maple. Less common but present are shagbark hickory, black cher- ry, Sassafras, tulip popular, cucumber, aspen, and eastern hemlocks.
"Let's take our hearts for a walk in the woods and listen to the magic whispers of old trees."
