1. Butternut Trail Marker
Inscription.
Man cannot himself escape from Nature. Neither can he ever subdue her or attempt to exploit her endlessly without becoming himself a victim.
Louis Bromfield-Pleasant Valley, 1945

Trail Description:
The Butternut Trail shares this hillside with the Malabar Farm's Pugh Cabin. This cabin was built in 1938 by James Pugh, an employee of the power company. Pugh built his cabin using old telephone poles and for the first decade it served as a weekend retreat. With the addition of a kitchen, bathroom, and two bedrooms in the late 1940s the cabin became the Pugh family's full time residence.

The trees you can see along this trail include red and white oak, sugar maple, beech, butternut, aspen, black cherry, shagbark hickory, dogwood, sassafras, and sycamore.

"Reading about nature is fine, but if a person walks in the woods and lis- tens carefully, he can learn more than what is in books."
George Washington Carver
