Inscription.

Athlone Castle was first fitted out as an artillery platform shortly after 1800. At that time it mounted eleven 6-pounder guns, although heavier cannon were subsequently installed. The cannon on display is an 18th-century 24-pounder. The royal monogram GR is visible on the barrel. The embrasure, through which the barrel projects, is brick-lined to soften the impact of hostile fire and reduce the danger to the gunners from stone splinters.

Erected by Athlone Castle.
