Orwell's Civil War Roll of Honor. . , Five months after the start of the Civil War, in early September of 1861, near this spot at the town hall, a patriotic rally occurred. "The house was crowded and intense excitement prevailed, and after listening to patriotic speeches for a short time, a call was made for recruits, and amid the cheering and stirring notes of the fife and drum, and waving of the stars and stripes, some 25 young men went forward and placed their names on the roll for cavalry service. I made one of the numbers...", quote of Wells Bushnell. This group would be the core of company a of the 6th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry. By October, 93 men would have signed up, they traveled to their first training camp, Camp Hutchins, in Warren, Ohio. They would fight mainly in Virginia. Kelly's Ford, 2nd Manassas, the Gettysburg Campaign, Sheridan's Raid, and Sailor's Creek would make up some of their 52 engagements. The 6th participated in lesser known but bloody battles at Aldi, Upperville, Haw's Shop, and Saint Mary's Church. Their last battle was on April 9, 1865, Appomattox Court House, Va. three and a half years of war came at a price for Company A, 29 troopers would be captured, 25 wounded (3 twice), and 11 would pay the ultimate sacrifice., Commanding officers of Company A, 6th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry: , Captain Amander Bingham - promoted to Major Oct. 1, 1862 , Captain Delos R. Northway - Oct. 1, 1862 thru May 28, 1864, when killed in action at Haw's Shop (Aenon Church) Virginia. Promoted to Major on May 9, 1864 , Captain Porter S. Tinan - promoted May 9, 1864, After serving for almost 3 years of war, Captain Delos Northway arrived home on furlough and married his sweetheart, Abbie Proctor, on March 6, 1864. Upon returning to his regiment, he shared with a comrade "I'll never see my wife again." Delos was killed in action, May 28. 1864.
