Fredonia in Chautauqua County, New York — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
Dr. Squire White
Dr. Squire White was the first licensed physician in Chautauqua County, having settled here in Pomfret in 1809. White had served a brief stint as a preacher in the neighboring Town of Sheridan the year before. Dr. White immediately became an important part of our young community. Dr. White married Sarah Barker in 1813 (daughter of Hezeikiah Barker) and had four children with her until her untimely death in 1823. Dr. White remarried later to Lydia Cushing (daughter of Zattu Chshing) and had three children with her. Dr. White was very active in the community, serving as Town Supervisor in 1838 and 1839. Dr. White purchased 25 acres of land from his father-in-law Hezekiah Barker at the corner of what at the corner of what is today Main and White Street. On that site, Dr. White built a beautiful home that was eventually demolished years after his death in 1857 White's son Devillo constructed new home on the original site and lived in it for the next 45 years. In 1919 Dr. White's grandaughter Isabelle White sold the home which has today survived as The White Inn Hotel and Restaurant. Contrary to popular belief, Dr. White never saw or lived in the White Inn which bears his name today.
