British Loyalists
During the American Revolutionary British Loyalists (Colonists who remained loyal to Great Britain) used Clyde Blockhouse as a depot for supplies brought from Canada. Two Loyalist units believed to have used the blockhouse were Brant’s Volunteers, led by Mohawk war leader Joseph Brant, and Butler’s Rangers, led by Major John Butler.

Iroquois Village of Sodoms
During the French and Indian War (1754-1763) the Iroquois village named Sodoms existed in Clyde. It is unclear whether it was still here at the time of the Revolution, but a scouting force from General Sullivan’s army passed through Clyde during the expedition, it is claimed that Sullivan’s men pursued a party of Butler’s Rangers to a point west of Clyde where a minor battle may have been fought along the banks of the Clyde River.

Sullivan Expedition
In the late summer of 1779, George Washington ordered a campaign to be directed against the Iroquois Indians and the British Loyalists in western New York. A third of the Continental Army was dispatched to the region, under the command of Major General John Sullivan. Known as the Sullivan Expedition, this massive military effort defeated Butler, Brant, and the Iroquois and destroyed over 40 Native American villages.
