The Place Home
Hooghan
The hooghan (hogan) is the Dinι (Navajo) people's traditional home and is constructed according to instructions given by the diyin dine'ι, shortly after man emerged into the Fourth World. The first or male hogan was the fork-stick hogan frame, a pyramid with 5 triangular faces. The entrance is to face the east (Ha'a'aah) in order to catch the first rays of dawn.
The female hogan is the epicenter of family life and ceremony. Unlike the smaller male hogan it is meant to accommodate multiple people and ceremonies related to traditional beliefs. The structure is round, representing the womb. The logs are harvested from juniper trees including 9 major house posts that represent the gestation time for mothers to carry a baby. The logs are placed with the growing end to the east (Ha'a'aah) and so forth, in a clockwise manner. The ceiling is Intricately structured to represent hands interlocking to cradle a baby, the chimney represents the bellybutton and the hallway is the way out of our Mother's womb.
