The Village
Kitsoki
| | Itam Hopisinom? We are the Virtuous Peaceful People | |
Kitsoki (village) is the body and at its center is the Kiisonvi (plaza), the heart of the village. This is created by the Kikihu (homes) that are conjoined together and comprise this body. These homes were normally rectangle, multi-storied and made of sandstone and mud mortar. The roofs were constructed of cottonwood/juniper beams, thatched with greasewood boughs, rabbit brush and layered with mud to keep the elements out. A fireplace with a chimney was included to keep warmth as well as to cook on.
Attached was another structure (tϊmtsokk) where pilki (paper-like bread) and other foods were prepared. Aside from the homes were small adobe ovens for baking. Further aside were the religious subterranean structure called a Kiva where ceremonies and important meetings were held. Many ancient Puebloan ruins (kkiφt) included these kikivatuy, both rectangular and round for these same purposes.
The villages were designed specifically to their cultural religion that included solar and lunar cycles.
