The de Burgo Hall and Castle/Halla agus Castlean de Burgo
(The Red Earl Hall) (Halla an Νarla Dheirg)
Inscription.
This medieval hall of which the earliest phase belong to the 13th century was archaeologically excavated. The hall has several phases. The piers were inserted in the late medieval time and the buttresses were also added at a later date. The majority of the present structure dates to the late 12th or 13th century. The octagonal columns were added in the 15th century or later and the cruciform metal-working [?] is post-medieval. Also discovered in the store building in the Customs House yard was the early medieval Castle of Galway. This was built on or near the site of an early Irish dϊn or Castle. Only part of the N.E. wall of this building and a later lime-kiln which had been built against it were excavated. It has a steep base batter[?] and probably formed part of the keep of the castle built in 1232 and rebuilt after its partial destruction in 1233. The remains of the keep is now covered over but preserved, while the hall is preserved for viewing by the public.
