1. On-The-Wing Marker
Ireland was once covered by ancient forests - majestic oak, yew and an extinct variety of Scots Pine. Somewhere around 5 or 6 thousand years ago, our climate became progressively warmer and wetter causing many of our forests to die. Some fallen trunks and partial root-systems were gradually covered and eventually buried in fast-growing mosses and lichens. These tree-remnants were hidden and indefinitely preserved in the oxygen-free and acidic bog.
Over a prolonged period of time a chemical reaction between the tannin in the oak and the acidic bog-water, turned the oak-wood black to its core.
Unearthed many thousands of years later, bog-oak is the perfect medium for the 3-winged bird....On-The-Wing
The base is bog-pine, resting on a stone cairn.
