Le Château des Brouillards
| — | Histoire de Paris | — |
Despite legend, the folly built here in 1772 was not intended for the writer Lefranc de Pompignan, but for a lawyer at the Parliament of Paris. The origin of its poetic mists undoubtedly comes from the water vapors caused by the nearby springs upon contact with the fresh air. In 1854, Gérard de Nerval dreamed of an ideal oasis of peace there: "What seduced me, in this small space sheltered by large trees, was first of all this remnant of the vineyard linked to the memory of Saint Denis... Then there was the vicinity of the watering hole, which in the evening comes alive with the spectacle of horses and dogs being bathed there... an admirable place of retreat, silent at times..." he wrote in "L'illustration". Dilapidated and threatened with demolition, the Château des Brouillards was restored from 1922 to 1926.
