⎯⎯⎯
The Physics Laboratory of the ENS
Originally located in the southern corner of the Cour des Ernests quadrangle on Rue d'Ulm, the Physics Laboratory of the École Normale Supérieure moved here in 1940, truly taking off after the war with the appointment of a new director, Yves Rocard. The more spacious premises then allowed for the arrival of a number of professors and researchers, and a redefinition of the research policy at a very high level led to innovative directions being taken in geophysics, solid-state physics (particularly semiconductors), radio astronomy, and particle and high-energy physics. By the 1950s, the expansion of this laboratory made it necessary to expand to Orsay, Nançay, Meudon, and other centers. Through the development of its resources and its openness to the outside world, the École Normale Supérieure laboratory has played a significant role in the revival of French physics.
