1. Ethnic Neighborhoods Marker

Inscription. The 1900 U.S. census listed the Village population at 1,300 people. Those who were foreign born include: Germany-106, Russia-58, Bohemia-57, Italy-51, England-45, Austria-20, Ireland-13, Wales-12, 17 others from Europe and 22 born in the Indian Territory.

Ethnic groups in Glen Carbon often formed their own social organizations, sometimes clustered together in their own neighborhoods. Villagers called the area of Park, Summit and Austin streets "Little Italy." Residents there prized their vineyards where they grew grapes for their homemade wine. Bohemians tended to settle in the Glen Crossing area forming their own club at Meyer's tavern and dance hall.
