Richmond on Staten Island in Richmond County, New York — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
Staten Island Connections
Roads, rails and ferries connected Mills to an expanding economy.
During the 1700s and 1800s, Staten Island's commercial activity expanded from neighborly bartering to more complex trade networks. Villages grew, and New roads were built to connect them. Staten Island's first railroad allowed for easier transport of goods across the island. Ferry crossings provided links to larger ports that took part in transatlantic trade. Transportation developments allowed local mills on Staten Island and elsewhere to become contributors to America's growing.
