1. We are Chickasaw Marker
Chickasaws are resilient. Before and after European contact, we were deliberate in our actions of protecting our Chikasha moma (people) and asserting our strength and sovereignty among other Southeastern Indian societies. This was particularly demonstrated in our first encounter with Spaniard Hernando de Soto and his men in December 1540. After defeating the Oshpani (Spanish), we continuously maintained our tashka (warrior) spirit, strategically allying with European nations to garner foreign resources and materials for our own.
This perseverance is expressed in our history through both warfare and diplomacy. Time and time again, we see our leaders protect and promote our people and interests. Though forcefully removed from our Homeland beginning in 1837, we rebuilt and reestablished our chokka-achaffa' (families), communities, businesses and schools in our new territory. Today, the Chickasaw Nation is economically strong, culturally vibrant and full of energetic people still dedicated to the preservation of family, community and culture.
