Inscription. The building you are standing in perfectly captures the importance of the natural resources offered by this location. This building was one of dozens of roll mills. Roll Mills were where the ingredients of black powder were mixed, or milled, under intense pressure from extremely heavy roll wheels. The water in front of you, the walls all around you, and the variety of trees that once grew along the banks were all essential parts of the powder making process.

Erected by Hagley Museum and Library.
