Hagley Museum near Wilmington in New Castle County, Delaware — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
Greenhouse
E. I. du Pont built a greenhouse on this site in 1822. Archaeological evidence indicates that it was similar to the illustration above, with a high north wall and glass roof sloping to the south. Bulbs, camellias, and other ornamental flowers were grown in the greenhouse for winter enjoyment, or for later transplanting to the garden.
The family and friends of Emily Tybout du Pont (1913-1991), in recognition of the kindness she bestowed on so many, have created an endowment in her name for the E. I. du Pont garden. A birdbath and outline of this historic greenhouse commemorate her love of nature and gardening.
Erected by Hagley Museum and Library.
