Battle Ribbons
The eight ribbons on the superstructure were earned by North Carolina for her service in the Pacific Theater. She served in every major naval offensive in the Pacific area of operations during World War II, earning 15 battle stars. The three silver stars on the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal represent the 15 battle stars. The Battleship used this style during the war.

The two different flags are both Japanese. The red sun with the rays was the ensign, flying from military ships. The plain red sun was and is the national flag.

The crashing plane and 24 flags signify that North Carolina downed 24 enemy planes.
