1. St Peter's Church and the Mayflower Pilgrims from Sandwich Marker
Inscription. This church has a direct link with the first colonists in New England, America. Early in the 17th Century, several parishioners separated from St Peter's and joined the Pilgrim Church in Leiden, the Netherlands. There they could worship without interference from the edicts of the Church of England.

Four of them later sailed on the Mayflower, in 1620, intending to form a colony with others in what was to become the United States of America. The four Mayflower Pilgrims were: James and Mrs Chilton, Mary Chilton, and Moses Fletcher. The family names of the Sandwich Pilgrims who travelled to the New World later were Basset, Chilton, and Masterson.

The US national holiday, Thanksgiving, is celebrated every November to commemorate the thanksgiving held in the Plimouth* Colony, New England in 1621.

* Plimouth - early spelling of Plymouth.
