1. Strawberry Way Marker
Inscription.
A modest part of the city's original street plan of 1784, Strawberry Way extends uphill from Liberty Avenue to Grant Street, where the US Steel Tower (Harrison & Abramovitz, 1971) rises in dramatic perspective.

Three tiny brick row houses of c. 1850 survive in the company of such proud neighbors as the First Lutheran Church (Andrew Peebles, 1888); the Harvard-Yale-Princeton Club (c. 1890; remodeled by Edward B. Lee in 1930); the original headquarters of Alcoa (Harrison & Abramovitz, 1953); the Smithfield United Church with its aluminum spire (Henry Hornbostel, 1926); and the Bell Telephone Company of Pennsylvania with its 20-story annex of 1931 by James T. Windrim, where the Verizon-PA Corporation is located. The one-story covered walk of the annex, with shallow vaults in green and cream Guastavino tile and limestone piers, beautifully frames the humble little houses across the Way.
