The countryside around Chilham
It is not surprising to find stately homes and historic parklands in the countryside around Chilham the rising downs and plateau woodlands have long provided superb backdrops for the homes of the wealthy. Chilham Castle has some beautiful grounds, which can he viewed, though from beyond its wells. The neighbouring estate at Gudmersham has more accessible grounds.
Most of the parklands in the area were severely damaged in the Great Storm of 1987, and many veteran trees - important for wildlife as for the landscape - were lost. However, the storm did provide an opportunity to restore the parklands to their former glory.
Walk from the station into Chilham itself end you will find one of the most charming and well preserved villages in Kent. While only a stone's throw from the station is Chilham Lake, with the lovely mill at its western end.
The countryside around the village is characterised by orchards, pastures and arable fields, scattered with a few areas of wild flower rich chalk grassland, such as Down Bank. The landscape to the south of Chilham to nationally protected part of the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. which stretches across the county from Dover to the Surrey border. It's a well wooded area, particularly on the plateaux of the downs, which are dominated by the extensive ancient woodlands of Denge Wood, Eggringe Wood and King's Wood.
