Inscription.
[English]  Completion of the Sault Canal opened up an all Canadian waterway from Lake Superior to the Atlantic Ocean. The waterway was formed by a series of eight canals which provided uninterrupted passage for vessels carrying passengers and cargo from Thunder Bay (Port Arthur and Fort William) to the harbours in Montreal and Quebec City. This system was superseded by the St. Lawrence Seaway which opened in 1959. Other Heritage Canals in the Parks Canada family include the Trent Severn Waterway and the Rideau Canal.
