MiG-21
Mikoyan-Gurevich
The Mikoyan-Gurevich-21 was one of the most famous fighter aircraft of the Cold War. It is a Russian-built jet and was never used by the Canadian military, but was commonly used by Eastern Bloc, middle eastern and Asian counties. Many of the MiG-21s that were built are still in use today in more than 20 countries.
The MiG fighter was designed in the 1950s to replace the MiG-17 and Mi[G]-19. The prototype debuted at the Soviet Aviation Day in Moscow in 1955, but it underwent extensive modifications after that, including a delta wing configuration to improve speed. It would become the most manufactured supersonic jet in history.
The MiG-21 model MF in the Museum's collection served in Luftstreitkräfte der Nationalen Volksarmee (East German Air Force) from May 1975 to September 20, 1990. On October 3, 1990, Germany was reunified and the two air forces were merged. This aircraft was taken on strength with the Luftwaffe after unific[a]tion for a short period of time and given the Luftwaffe serial number 22+45. The aircraft was withdrawn from use in October 1990. It was donated to the Government of Canada by the Government of Germany in 1993. The MiG was transferred to the National Air Force Museum of Canada in October, 1993.
