Guilford Center in South Central Region, Connecticut — The American Northeast (New England)
The Guilford Green as a Common
The Green has been owned and used in common by Guilford townspeople for more than three centuries. Long ago, cattle, sheep, geese, and swine were allowed to wander at large by neighboring farmers. Town records reflect laws for controlling nuisance animals and, by 1815, pasturing of animals on the Green was forbidden.
