Am 6. Mai 1933 fand wenige Meter entfernt von hier - vor dem Haus Maximilianstraße 95 - eine der ersten öffentlichen Bücherverbrennungen durch die Nationalsozialisten in Deutschland statt. Dieser symbolische Vernichtungsakt richtete sich gegen jegliche Literatur, die der NS-Ideologie widersprach. So wurden Werke von Bertolt Brecht, Else Lasker-Schüler, Thomas Mann, Erich Maria Remarque, Nelly Sachs, Anna Seghers und vielen anderen geächteten Autorinnen und Autoren ins Feuer geworfen. Es war der Auftakt zur massenhaften Verfolgung und Ermordung von Menschen.
Die Bürgerinnen und Bürger der Stadt Speyer erinnern hiermit an diesen Akt kultureller Barbarei und mahnen gegen das Vergessen.
On May 6, 1933, just a few meters from here — in front of the house at Maximilianstraße 95 — one of the first public book burnings by the National Socialists in Germany took place. This symbolic act of destruction was directed against any literature that contradicted Nazi ideology. Works by Bertolt Brecht, Else Lasker-Schüler, Thomas Mann, Erich Maria Remarque, Nelly Sachs, Anna Seghers, and many other banned authors were thrown into the flames. It marked the beginning of the mass persecution and murder of people.
The citizens of the city of Speyer commemorate this act of cultural barbarism and call for vigilance against forgetting.
