More about this marker. St. Hyacinth is one of three churches in Illinois that have been designated as a minor basilica by the Roman Catholic Church. St. Hyacinth was awarded basilica status in 2003 by Pope John Paul II, who is also honored with a statue in this fenced area just west of the church.
 
Regarding Rev. Jerzy Popiełuszko. Fr. Jerzy Popiełuszko was ordained in 1972 and, serving in parishes in Warsaw, became known for his support of workers and unionists in the Solidarity movement, often criticizing Poland's communist regime. On October 19, 1984, Fr. Popiełuszko was kidnapped by three members of Poland's secret police and thrown into a reservoir, where his body was

found about 10 days later. His funeral in November 1984 was attended by close to 1 million people. In 2010, the Roman Catholic Church recognized Fr. Popiełuszko as a martyr and beatified him, beginning the process of sainthood.

According to an article by the Polish Museum of America, this memorial to Fr. Popiełuszko at Chicago's St. Hyacinth Church, founded in the famously Polish Avondale neighborhood, was dedicated in 1985 by the Illinois Division of the Polish American Congress. Other memorials to Fr. Popiełuszko can be found in Polish neighborhoods around the United States, including ones in Brooklyn, Trenton, N.J., and New Haven, Conn.
