Veterans Memorial Fountain
Dedicated: May 31, 1949
⎯⎯⎯
Rededicated: May 27, 2013
The City of Massillon honored its local war heroes from all wars by erecting this fountain and reflecting pool in City Hall Park on Memorial Day, 1949. City Hall Park was renamed "Veterans Memorial Park" in the 1980s.
In a 1948 fundraising campaign, the Massillon Jaycees raised $2,500.00 dollars through voluntary contributions from the community to finance the construction of the fountain and pool. The Jaycees' committee consisted of George Glock, chairman; James E. Lane; Robert Dutchess; and Paul Gray. The fountain and reflecting pool were designed by James H. Young, a local resident, using Imperial Danby Marble for the water fountain and coping surrounding the pool. Danby Marble is the same marble specified by the United States for all memorials in Washington, D.C. Beiter Monument Works supplied the Danby Marble at cost and Massillon Washed Gravel Company provided the concrete for the base.
The original marble fountain and pool fell into disrepair over time. The marble water fountain was damaged and eventually removed. In 2009, under the leadership of Judge Edward J. Elum and David Hinderer, a complete restoration and renovation project commenced to improve the fountain, the reflecting pool, and Veterans Memorial Park.
The Wall of Honor was added to the Park on the west wall of the Municipal Building. The Veterans Memorial Fountain was rededicated to all of the City's war heroes and veterans on Memorial Day, 2013.
