1. Nellie Melton Panhellenic Quadrangle Marker

Inscription. In 1995, plans were made for construction of a quad of buildings to serve as meeting houses for the three active sororities, with an eye towards the possibility of adding a fourth in the future. Completed in 1998, the southeast building was renovated in 2006 to become the Student Health Clinic. The area known as the Panhellenic Quad, was named for Mrs. Nellie Melton, Dean of Women from 1957-1966 and Acting Dean of Arts & Sciences, 1961-1962. In her capacity as Dean of Women, Mrs. Melton oversaw the Panhellenic Council and the Association of Women Students. She was a long-time member of the American Association of University Women, serving in a number of offices, including two years as State President. She was Chairman of the Citizens Advisory Committee of the Oklahoma Educational Television Authority, and was a member of the Oklahoma City Board of Education for nine years, serving for two years as President of the Board. At the national level, President Lyndon Johnson named her a member of the Defense Advisory Committee on Women from 1962 to 1965. Mrs. Nellie Melton was an exceptional role model for the
