Barnegat Sneakbox. (AKA: Duckboat). The Barnegat Sneakbox is a small, lightweight, and versatile type of boat that originated in the Barnegat Bay region of new jersey in the mid-19thcentury. It was initially designed for hunting waterfowl in the bay's shallow water sand marshes. Crafted from wood and typically measuring around 12 to 14 feet long, the Sneakbox has a flat bottom, low profile, and pointed ends, making it highly maneuverable and easy to conceal. Its design allows it to be propelled by oars, poles, or a small sail, enabling quiet movement through calm waters. Overtime, the Barnegat Sneakbox also gained popularity as a recreational craft, valued for its simplicity and adaptability.
Based on available records, this particular boat was originally owned by Helen and Freeman Endicott. Helen, a member of the Camp family grew up in Cape May Court House. The Camp family renowned for their maritime heritage, included sea captains spanning over three generations and traced their origins to Goshen. After the Endicotts, the boat was passed to Clarence and Leona Sewell, residents of Rio Grande. It was later donated to the Cape May County Museum before ultimately arriving at its current location.
