As an early African American firm, Pilgrim Health and Life Insurance Company is founded with Walter Hornsby as the first General Manager. It played an instrumental business and civic role in Augusta until 1991.

Dr. James E. Carter becomes the first licensed African American dentist in Augusta. His son, J.E. Carter, Jr., later joins the practice. The Augusta City Council adopts the white-only Democratic primary to disenfranchise black voters.

In the Cumming v. Richmond County Board of Education decision, the United States Supreme Court supports the closing of Ware High School.
