Sugar House in Salt Lake City in Salt Lake County, Utah — The American Mountains (Southwest)
Joe Hill
Songwriter, Itinerant Laborer, Union Organizer
Hill was born October 7, 1879 in Gδvle, Sweden and executed at the Utah State Penitentiary on November 19, 1915.
In hobo jungles, on picket lines and at workers' rallies, Hill was well-known as the author of popular labor songs and as a member of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW). Thanks in large part to his songs "The Preacher and the Slave" and "There is Power in a Union" in addition to his stirring, well-publicized call to his fellow workers on the eve of his execution-"Don't waste time mourning, organize!" Hill became, and has remained, the best-known IWW member and a labor folk hero.
There is pow'r, there is pow'r
In a band of workingmen,
When they stand hand in hand.
That's a pow'r, that's a pow'r
That must rule every land,
One Industrial Union Grand.
