Her Story
Annie D is a Chesapeake buyboat, built in Deltaville, Virginia in 1957 for waterman, Thomas Asbury. Buyboats are the Bay's tractor trailers, built to transport fish, oysters, lumber and produce all over the Chesapeake.

Echo Hill Outdoor School acquired Annie D in 1983. After two years of restoration, she bean her service with the school's summer Explore program in 1985, exploring the Chester River weekly during the summer with six students, an Echo Hill captain and a crew member. With the Ric in tow, the group roams the river and uncovers its mysteries at will.

Did you know?
Thomas Asbury, was based out of Reedville, Virginia, which is still home to a thriving commercial menhaden fishery. Menhaden are filter feeding fish that play an important role in the Chesapeake's food chain, serving as prey to bigger species like rockfish.

Fun Facts with the Captain
"Buyboats" were used as middlemen, buying oysters from different watermen and hauling the oysters to Chesapeake packing houses.

In 2011, the Outdoor School received an award from the Stories of the Chesapeake Heritage Areas for the "Save the Annie D" restoration project.
