1. About Requesting Transportation From Kingstree, South Carolina to Galveston, Texas
On January 15, 1867, a transportation request was made to the Freedmens Bureau to transport 435 Freed men, women and children from Kingstree, South Carolina in Williamsburg County to Charleston, SC then on to Galveston, Texas to work on labor contracts throughout Central Texas. The 2023 discovery of the Transportation Request, which included a list of names, significantly expanded the known group of individuals and families who undertook this migration. Some individuals and families listed on the transportation request have been identified in Texas census, tax, marriage, and other historical records. Others appear in 1870 South Carolina census records, leading researchers to question whether they initially traveled to Texas and then returned within three years, or if they ultimately decided not to make the journey. To date, some names from the transportation request have not yet been found in any records. Many connections to the descendants of this group of formerly enslaved people have been established through traditional genealogical research combined with the advancements of DNA testing, particularly through services like AncestryDNA. The marker was dedicated and unveiled Saturday, May 17, 2025. Additional information about the marker is available at www.kingstreetogalvestonmemorial.com
